Permanent Account Number (PAN) issued by the Income Tax Department, is a 10 digit alphanumeric number, in a laminated card to a person who applies for it.
This unique number or code gives the department ease of access to keep a sharp check on almost all the transactions of the financial nature of the person. These transactions include tax payments, TDS/TCS credits, returns of income/wealth/gift/FBT, purchase and sale of assets over and above certain specified limits, and so on.

  • The motive of the Government behind the introduction of PAN was to facilitate:
  • Prevention of evasion of Taxes by the Tax-payers
  • Ease in the payment of taxes
  • Widening of the Tax base
  • Easy retrieval of Information

Moreover, for identification purposes, PAN also requires its applicants to submit certain important documents just like any other government allotted/issued Identification proof. Interested applicants can use both online and offline mode to apply for PAN with the IT Department.

Two different kinds of application forms are available for making an application for the allotment of PAN.

Furthermore, interested people can apply for a new PAN as well as the correction of an existing PAN card.

Documents required for PAN card in case of Indian Nationals

An applicant who is an Indian Citizen is required to submit documents along with form 49A concerning the following:

  • Identity
  • Address
  • Date of Birth

  • depository account statement
  • bank account statement
  • consumer gas connection card or the book or piped gas bill

2. A copy of any one of the following documents:

  • post office passbook bearing applicant’s address
  • applicant’s passport
  • passport
  • passport of the spouse
  • Voter’s Id card
  • latest property tax assessment order
  • driving license
  • domicile certificate
  • AADHAR Card

 

© Proof of date of birth—

A copy of any one of the following:

  • birth certificate issued by the Municipal Authority
  • pension payment order
  • marriage certificate
  • matriculation certificate
  • passport
  • driving license
  • domicile certificate
  • An affidavit is sworn in before a magistrate bearing the date of birth of the applicant.
2. Hindu Undivided Family (HUF)

a.) An affidavit by the Karta of the Hindu Undivided Family stating the name, father’s name and address of all the coparceners on the date of application; and

b.) copy of any document applicable in case of an individual applicant specified above in serial number 1, in respect of Karta of the HUF, as proof of identity, address, and date of birth

3. Company registered in India Copy of Certificate of Registration (Incorporation certificate) issued by the Registrar of Companies.
4. Firm (including Limited Liability Partnership) formed or registered in India

a.) Copy of Certificate of Registration issued by the Registrar of Firms/Limited Liability Partnerships; or

b.) Copy of Partnership Deed.

 Documents required for PAN card Form 49AA

 Company Registered/Incorporated outside India

  • Copy of Registration Certificate.
  • Registration certificate copy granted in India or of approval granted by Indian Authorities to establish an office in India.

Firm Registered/formed outside India

The documents required for the PAN application are as follows:

  • Copy Registration certificate or a copy of the partnership deed.
  • Copy of registration certificate granted in India or of approval granted by Indian Authorities to establish an office in India.

Association of Persons (Trusts) established outside India

The documents required for the PAN application are

  • Registration certificate copy
  • copy of registration certificate issued in India or of approval granted to set up an office in India by Indian Authorities

 Association of Persons (other than Trusts)

The documents required for the PAN application are as follows:

  • Registration certificate copy issued in the country where the applicant is located
  • Copy of registration certificate allotted in India or of the authorization granted by Indian Authorities.to establish an office in India.
